40 HZ AND THE BRAIN

Some of the most striking recent work on sound and the brain centers on 40 Hz—a rhythm at the low edge of the gamma band. Researchers at MIT and elsewhere have shown that light and sound pulsing at 40 Hz can drive measurable brainwave activity, and early studies—first in mice, now in small human trials—suggest this stimulation may reduce biological markers associated with Alzheimer’s disease and support memory and cognition. The research is young, and 40 Hz stimulation is not a treatment for anything yet. THE 432 HZ QUESTION

Standard concert tuning places A at 440 Hz. In a double-blind pilot study, 33 volunteers heard the same music tuned both ways: at 432 Hz their heart rate ran measurably lower, with blood pressure and breathing trending the same direction, and most reported feeling more focused and satisfied. A pilot is a pilot—the authors themselves call for larger trials. But it is a published, controlled measurement, not internet lore, and it points the way tradition says it should. Read the study →

528 HZ AND THE HEART

The “love frequency” has been tested more directly than most solfeggio claims. In a randomized controlled trial, 60 patients with mild hypertension listened to 528 Hz chanting for fifteen minutes a day; a month later the listening group showed lower pulse and blood pressure, calmer nervous-system readings, better sleep, and improved wellbeing—while the standard-care group showed none of it. BRAINWAVE ENTRAINMENT

The broadest idea on this page, and the premise behind DotWĀV’s binaural and isochronic modes: a steady external rhythm can guide the brain’s own activity toward the same tempo. Delta rhythms (1–4 Hz) accompany deep, dreamless sleep; theta (4–8 Hz) accompanies meditation and deep relaxation.
